Is Online Rummy Legal in India? October 2026 Update
Reviewed 22 October 2026 · Rummy.Global Editorial
Do not rely on the old claim that calling rummy a game of skill makes online cash play lawful across India. The current central framework expressly covers online money games involving skill, chance or both.
The current central framework
India’s Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026 took effect on 1 May 2026. The government’s explanation prohibits online money games regardless of whether they involve skill, chance or both, while separating them from online social games and e-sports (Press Information Bureau).
The government states that the law applies across India and to services offered into India from outside the country. Its overview also identifies prohibitions on money-game advertising and related payment facilitation (PIB’s framework summary).
Free practice is a different product
The government distinguishes online social games and e-sports from prohibited online money games (PIB). Rummy.Global’s game has no deposit, entry stake, cash balance or cash prize. Its local scores are practice statistics, not money.
This does not amount to a legal certification of every product described as free. Features, payments, prizes and the actual service matter. Check current official requirements for your own circumstances.
Why older state-by-state advice is incomplete
An old list of states that permitted skill gaming does not answer whether an online money game is permitted under the later central framework. Nor does a historic court discussion about rummy’s skill element establish that a present-day paid app is compliant.
This page does not attempt to decide every court challenge or every offline social-game scenario. It addresses online money-rummy guidance for this site, using the official framework available at review.
Operator notices
| Platform | Current evidence | Check |
|---|---|---|
| A23 | Cash games unavailable; free games advertised | Official A23 notice |
| RummyCircle | Published August 2025 terms describe discontinued cash games and free play; current lobby not tested | Official terms |
| Junglee Rummy | Gaming services being discontinued; gameplay unavailable to users in India | Official closure FAQ |
| Stake | Points Rummy documented; no Indian eligibility, current bonus or withdrawal-speed claim established | Official Points Rummy guide |
Offshore access is not permission
An overseas website, cryptocurrency payment or accessible app is not an exemption from Indian law. This page does not recommend depositing, using a VPN or seeking another route to cash rummy in India.
Do not send identity documents, deposits or an 'unlock fee' to an agent promising to reopen an account. For an existing balance, use the operator’s own support channel and keep transaction records.
