Points Rummy Rules: Scoring and Worked Examples

Points Rummy treats each hand as a separate result. For learning, keep a points score without assigning money to it.

Which rules does this page use?

Indian Rummy tables do not all use the same rules. Pagat’s Indian Rummy rules describe two sequences, including a pure sequence, and note that some tables require a four-card sequence.

The current Rummy.Global game requires one pure sequence of at least three cards, a second sequence of at least three cards, and valid groups covering all 13 cards. It uses one 54-card deck. Aces count 10 penalty points and can be low in A-2-3 or high in Q-K-A, but cannot wrap in K-A-2. A designated wild-rank card can count naturally in a pure sequence when its original rank and suit fit. Printed jokers cannot. Losing penalties depend on valid sequences and protected groups, with an 80-point cap.

How one hand works

Players draw and discard until someone makes a valid declaration. Under the commonly published scoring convention, the winner receives zero penalty, A/J/Q/K count 10 each, numbered cards count face value and jokers count zero (RummyCircle’s rules). Scoring works differently in 21 Card Rummy, where value cards change the count.

That does not mean every losing player can subtract all apparent melds. First check which sequences are required before any groups are protected from penalty.

A simple score calculation

Assume the table permits you to count only the loose cards and those cards are A♠, 9♥ and 4♣. Under common A=10 scoring, the result is 10 + 9 + 4 = 23 points. The current Rummy.Global game uses the same ace value.

If countable cards total 92, an 80-point cap gives 80. A fixed wrong-declaration penalty is a separate rule, not an arithmetic error in that sum.

First drop and middle drop

Published Points rules commonly use 20 for an initial drop and 40 for a later drop (published rules). Dropping is a table feature; our free simulator does not provide a Drop button.

A drop is not a win. It accepts a fixed penalty instead of continuing the hand. Compare that penalty with the plausible cost of continuing, rather than dropping automatically after a fixed number of turns.

Keep a useful practice record

• Record the sequence requirement and ace value at the top of the sheet.
• Record whether the result was a declaration, ordinary loss or fixed penalty.
• Write the cards that counted and check their sum.
• Review the discard or grouping decision, not only whether you won.

Points does not mean legal cash play

India’s Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026 took effect on 1 May 2026. The government’s explanation prohibits online money games regardless of whether they involve skill, chance or both, while separating them from online social games and e-sports (Press Information Bureau).

An overseas website, cryptocurrency payment or accessible app is not an exemption from Indian law. This page does not recommend depositing, using a VPN or seeking another route to cash rummy in India.
